Greek mythology: The first Olive Tree

On one of the trips that I went on in the beginning of the season there was a big focus on Greek mythology and one of my favourite stories was that of how the first olive tree arrived in Parga.

According to Greek mythology Zeus found out that people were no longer nice and helpful to each other so he decided to disguise himself and make his way down to earth. He pretended to be a lost wanderer in search for some food and a bed to rest on. After having being turned down my several households, he finally arrived to a small house in the country side. He knocked on the door and an old farmer opened the door, he said that they didn't have much but he invited Zeus in to stay the night and shared the little food he and his wife had.

The next morning Zeus revealed who he was and asked the couple if he could grant them one wish. They could said no at first, saying they had everything they needed. However, after a few moments they said, actually, when the time has come we would like to leave this earth together. Zeus agreed to this and said that when the time is right they should let him know.

Many years later the couple were ready to leave this earth and let Zeus know. He told them to stand outside in their garden and embrace each other. The couple did as they were told and as they embraced each other for one last time he transformed them in to an olive tree. That is the story of how the first olive tree was planted in Greece and if you look real closely, the stem of the olive tree resembles a couple embracing each other.
