The Gili experience

The Gili Islands consist of three islands: Gili Air is the one closest to Lombok and the one middle in size and is where I took my dive certificate. The smallest one, Gili Meno, is one we never visited but is known as the honeymoon islands. Finally there's Gili Trawangan which is the largest and the one referred to as the party island. We had high hopes for Gili T after having such a great time at Gili Air and everyone we've met along the way has said it was a great place. In all honesty, we were a bit underwhelmed.

Firstly, the day time activities are exactly the same as on Gili Air which is pretty much just snorkeling and diving. Though there are a lot more shops which we got very excited about as both of us are after a new bikini or two, but after realising that these bikins were designed for skinny people we went straight to the nearest restaurant for a comfort burger, as you do.

Secondly,  the food was not nearly as good (nor as cheap) as on Gili Air. We had amazing food on Gili Air and big lunch portions for 20 000Rp (12 SEK/ €1.20) but in Gili T it was not only more expensive but just didn't taste as good. But it was nice to satisfy some of our food cravings such as having tacos and homemade Swedish meatballs made by a Swede (or at least taught how to make them by a Swede as it was genuine Swedish styled meatballs).

Finally, when it comes to the party scene, well, it is low season now so it will most likely be a completely different experience during high season. Their is about 10-15 bars/clubs (and more restaurants of course) and they were all located on about a 400m section of the main strip. There were people in three or four of the places and then there was meant to be one big party each night. However, the turned off the music at 2am so everyone ventured down to the Black Moon Party on the beach but this was such a mental place with the average age being 19 so we decided to take our "closer to 30 then 20" asses back home to bed. But they sure know how to make a drink, no Scandinavian measurements here, you can taste the alcohol!

Don't get me wrong, we had a great time in Gili T but Gili Air will still be my favourite island of the Gilis, well actually, of all of Indonesia even!
