We are all human beings so we have to love and care for each other

Two days ago we arrived in Yogyakarta, however, I have spent most of my time in bed with a fever and an aching body. Popping pain killers as if they were candy. But the few times we ventured outside the hotel we discovered the following things:

1. There is crazy traffic here but if you want to cross the road all you have to do is flap your arms like a bird and pretend you are flying and apperantly this will let the oncoming traffic know that they should stop.

2. They love fried chicken and rice here, KFC style.

3. They are incredible nice. We had lunch at a place yesterday and the owner sat down next to us and started to talk. Once we finsihed he offered to walk us to the Art School to see their latest works (which were fantastic!) and all the way he continued to check on to make sure that I was feeling ok in my little haze and made sure that we walked a route with as much shadow as possible to not exhauste more then necessary of the little energy I had. We thanked him very much for his kindness and his reply was simply "we are all human beings so we have to love and care for each other". Before he said goodbye to us outside the art school, he shook our hands and said, "I will pray for you to recover". A man that we met and talked to for 10 minutes. This man is just one of many examples of kindness in this country.

Indonesia is not a rich country in comparision to most Western countries but they have something so much more important here that is lacking very much in the Western world at the moment, the latest example being the terror attack in Sweden. Over here there is compassion, respect, love and understanding for people and their different religions. Here muslims and hindus live side by side, mosques and temples are built and respected as religious grounds. There are no hate crimes. We might be richer in terms of money, possessions and the latest developments and convience. But Indonesia is so much richer in humanity and kindness. We need to stop thinking that the Western world knows it all and have a look around us, travel, open your eyes and learn how humanity can and should be! Because in the end, the Indonesian man we met yesterday was right "we are all human beings"!
